President Trump Threatens CNN With Lawsuit
Is President Trump's threat of a lawsuit an attack on the free press?
Recently, a series of videotapes were released by a former CNN contractor which show network employees critiquing their company for its seemingly biased goal to “take down President Trump.” The videos also show employees discussing the supposed grudge held against President Trump by CNN’s President and CEO Jeffrey Zucker. This prompted President Trump to threaten legal action against the network by sending them a letter accusing CNN of “highly biased” reporting.
First Amendment lawyers have taken to analyzing the President’s letter, and many believe that “CNN’s decisions as to what to cover and how to do so are fully protected by the First Amendment.” First Amendment lawyer Ted Boutrous even goes so far as to call the letter “frivolous.”
This raises the question: is President Trump justified in defending himself against what he perceives as libel, or is his threat to sue media outlets an attack on freedom of the press?
