What is it?
- This evening will kick off the Republican National Convention which will nominate President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence as the party’s nominees for the 2020 election.
- This year’s convention will be held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic and will feature speeches from members of the Trump family, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from Jerusalem, and President Trump from the White House.
Why is it important?
- The RNC will formally nominate President Trump for reelection. His campaign has said that the convention will aim to “honor the great American story”.
- The convention was previously planned to take place in Charlotte, NC and was subsequently moved to Jacksonville, FL but both cities canceled citing coronavirus precautions. Some Republican leaders and delegates will still meet in person in Charlotte while the remainder will join virtually.
