What is it?
- The U.S. House of Representatives passed a $25 spending bill to fund the post office to help with mail-in ballots. The bill also prevents the Postal Service from breaking down the sort machines and removing the collection boxes. It will now go to the Senate for approval.
- While testifying to congress on Monday about mail in ballots during states’ primary elections, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy defended his management of the U.S. Postal Service. Democrats on the committee claimed that he intentionally disrupted mail service to slow down mail in voting, while Republicans called it a political stunt.
Why is it important?
- The bill that was passed in the House will fund the Postal Service to handle the increased volume of mail in ballots expected in November. It will also ensure there are no barriers that would slow down the processing of mail in ballots.
- Processing mail has been slowing down in the country, and this could lead to lost ballots and inaccurate results in the November general election. Mail in voting has successfully been used for decades U.S. state elections and other international elections.
