What is it?
- A new poll by Axios and IPSOS shows that one in three Americans thinks the election results will be announced on election night or within a couple days, contrary to many experts – whom nearly six in ten think it will take several weeks.
- Much of the concern on this issue is because of the increased usage of mail in voting during this election cycle due to coronavirus. Many experts have called for increased funding for the postal service to help prepare for the influx of mail in ballots.
Why is it important?
- There is a clear gap between public consensus and experts’ opinions when it comes to when they think the election result will be announced. This demonstrates the misinformation and the lack of electoral information available to voters.
- There is precedent for this as previous Presidential election results have been delayed before. In 2000, President George W. Bush’s victory was delayed by almost a month because of a vote recount in Florida.
