One Big Thing: Should Peru reform its constitution?
Join us and take our poll
What is it?
- Last month, Peru’s government was headed by three different presidents in the span of one week. On November 9, former President Martin Viscarra was impeached amid charges of bribery and corruption. He was succeeded by opposition leader Manuel Merino who immediately oversaw the violent repression of protesters, including two deaths, hundreds of injuries and over 40 reported disappearances. On November 14, Merino gave up power following the resignation of 13 of his 18 ministers.
- The Peruvian Congress finally appointed Francisco Sagasti, who is a former official from the World Bank, to serve as interim president. There will be an election in April 11, 2021, which will determine the new President, Vice President and new Congress.
Why is it important?
- Peru has had 3 new Presidents just in one week which demonstrates the instability the country currently faces. Aside from this, 68 of 130 current members of Congress are facing their own charges of corruption.
- Civilian protestors have been calling for a new constitution in Peru, which was written by former dictator Alberto Fujimori. Many believe that greater government accountability and a true system of checks and balances will help fight off corruption and strengthen the rule of law.
