One Big Thing: Does China’s deal with Iran weaken the United States’ Global influence?
Join us and take our poll
Last week, China agreed to invest $400 billion in the Iranian economy over the next 25 years. This deal, also known as the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, will also send a significant amount of oil from Iran to China. Furthermore, both countries will strengthen their military cooperation, including joint training and exercises, joint research and weapons development and intelligence-sharing. Many experts believe that this agreement undercuts the United States’ position to negotiate with Iran on the development of their nuclear program – a key part of the Biden Administration’s foreign policy goals. It also relieves Iran from much of the economic pressure they faced due to U.S. sanctions which effectively isolated them from the global economy. Currently, Iran is one of the least free countries in the world and stands accused of gross human rights violations, mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic, and is one of the leading repressors of free press and independent journalism.
