Today, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) unveiled a new bill which aims to strictly regulate big tech companies by blocking mergers and acquisitions outright. The “Trust-Busting for the Twenty-First Century Act” would ban any acquisitions by companies with a market cap of more than $100 billion, including vertical mergers. Many also believe that this would also limit tech companies’ power over free speech issues including how algorithms promote certain news. This new bill is not dissimilar to Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) which also imposed stricter anti-trust laws on big tech.
