The media is partly or completely restricted in 139 countries around the world, according to a report published last week by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). This year’s Press Freedom Index – RSF’s annual country-by-country report on press freedom – determined that just over 73% of the countries surveyed face a “totally blocked”, “seriously impeded” or “constrained” media environment. Over the past year, the COVID-19 pandemic has been used by governments as grounds to block journalists’ access to information sources, and reporting in the field. The report also specifically cites China’s malign influence on global press freedom as several countries have adopted regulations that are almost copy and pasted from China, like control of the internet and anti-fake news regulations.
