One Big Thing: Should the U.S. take further action regarding the situation in Belarus?
Join us and take our poll
Earlier this week, Ryanair flight 4978 was en route to Vilnius in Lithuania when it was forced to land in Minsk following a faked “security alert” by the Belarusian government. Since, it has become clear that the incident was staged to arrest opposition activist Raman Pratasevich who was on the flight. This is part of a larger effort by the Lukashenko regime in Belarus to silence its critics following a contentious election last year. Pratasevich mobilized anti-Lukashenko protests and was charged last year with "organizing mass riots and group actions that grossly violate public order". This incident also highlights the danger which many journalists face when reporting on authoritarian regimes around the world. Many international bodies and governments around the world have described the incident as “state sponsored hijacking” and call for an international investigation.
