One Big Thing: Are you worried about the rights Afghan women following the Taliban’s takeover?
Join us and take our poll
The rights of Afghan women and girls are at risk following last weekend’s takeover of the government by the Taliban. According to Fawzia Koofi, an Afghan lawmaker and activist, Afghan women constitute the country's most at-risk population and the U.S. withdrawal from the country left their rights to education, employment, and many other everyday freedoms in jeopardy. Despite the Taliban’s insistences that it will create an inclusive government, women will still be confined “within the bounds of Shariah Law”. In recent years, the Taliban has assassinated hundreds of Afghan women activists, journalists, and judges. Already, women have been told they can’t leave their homes without a male guardian, and some have been flogged and killed in the streets. If the international community sits idly by, the lives and rights of Afghan women and girls will be in peril.
