The Local Journalism Sustainability Act of 2021 is a bipartisan bill in support of local newsrooms across the country. The bill has a three-tiered approach which addresses local news outlets, small businesses who advertise or provide sponsorships for local news, and subscribers of these newsrooms:
- For local news organizations, the bill would provide a payroll tax credit which would creating an incentive to retain journalists.
- For small business sponsors, the bill would provide a tax credit to business who work with local newspapers, websites, radio or TV
- For subscribers, it would provide individual tax credits to help subsidize individual readers’ subscriptions to local news outlets.
