The Chinese government is leveraging American tech to build and maintain a massive civilian surveillance network. The Communist Party of China is using facial recognition software, voice recognition, GPS tracking, and other PID surveillance products to monitor political and religious dissidents, mostly from the minority Uighur ethnic group. Victims of the surveillance state are often sent to “re-education” camps and subjected to harsh living conditions, indoctrination, and sometimes torture.

Recent reports show that Silicon Valley tech giants and Boston area think tanks are inadvertently aiding this process by developing and selling many of these surveillance tools. What may seem like a fun face filter on an app in America may have a more devious use overseas.

The film focuses itself around lead investigator Dan Jones and his team’s effort to uncover the CIA’s brutal and ineffective forms of torture, and the ways that the CIA routinely misrepresented these facts to policymakers. When Senator Diane Feinstein attempted to publish the findings, she and Jones had to contend with the CIA and White House's attempts to block and undermine the report.

While many leaders defended and made excuses as to why it was necessary to use banned torture methods in the aftermath of 9/11, The Report, reminds us that the conversation about the use of torture isn’t over and our leaders need to be reminded to stand up for our American values at home and abroad. Wednesday, October 2nd marks one year since journalist Jamal Khashoggi died inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Khashoggi was a known political dissident, and many of his articles were critical of the Saudi government. The exact circumstances of his murder remain suspicious and largely unverified, and one year later, there are still many questions surrounding his death.

Here’s what you need to know about Khashoggi:

Jamal Ahmad Khashoggi was a Saudi born author, journalist and political dissident.
He was assassinated on October 2nd, 2018 inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
Khashoggi was a legal resident of the United States, and a columnist for the Washington Post at the time of his death.
Saudi Arabia initially denied any knowledge of Khashoggi's death.
Later, the Saudi government claimed his death was the result of rogue actors.
By November, the CIA had concluded Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman ordered Khashoggi's assassination.
