A Bipartisan Success Story In the Shadow of Impeachment
Would you like to see more bipartisan initiatives? Let your representatives know!
In this age of hyperpartisanism, an unlikely alliance between two lawmakers has national gained recognition and praise
House lawmakers Hakeem Jeffries (D. New York) and Doug Collins (R. Georgia) won the Allegheny College 2019 Prize for Civility in Public Life. Jeffries and Collins received the award for their work on the bipartisan FIRST STEP ACT, a criminal justice reform bill that reduces sentences for federal inmates based on positive behavior and job training.
This isn’t the first time the pair has reached across the aisle. Jeffries and Collins also worked together to pass a bill to protect songwriters, the Music Modernization Act, in 2013. They even released a joint Spotify mix of their favorite hip hop and country songs.
In this age of bitter partisan rivalries, Jeffries and Collins are living examples of what we can achieve when we place civility ahead of political rivalries. Would you like to see more bipartisan activity in Washington? Let your reps know how you feel.
