In the criminal justice system, the people who work within it should uphold the laws and be held accountable, if or when they stray outside the law. When I was growing up, Officer Friendly was promoted as a representation of someone to turn to safely if I got lost, hurt, scared, etc. However, that hasn't been true for Black youngsters. The way policing is done needs to be overhauled. Besides being able to pass physical exams to be an officer, better "gate keeping" needs to involve psychological testing and clinical assessment to weed out people who are unsuitable prior to attending the academy. If police work is considered a profession, then it also seems that certification or licensure would be appropriate.
