With a showing of national unity, let’s move forward together, embracing long-overdue social justice. The Confederate Flag and statues of those who committed themselves to disunion and slavery are iconographies of a devastating period of American history. For those who want to celebrate their Southern heritage, many symbols exist that don’t stoke bigotry and hate. We should honor the morally right ones during that period. In our recording of history, we can remember people for any extraordinary good deeds they did, but we shouldn’t ignore their immorality and the continued subjugation of Black America. American history needs to be truthfully told. In this way, we will learn and stop systemic racism that still remains a barrier to fairness and justice for all.
