We Hold These Truths
I grew up in North Carolina and learned firsthand the import of Confederate symbols, that “Yankee carpetbaggers and outside agitators better not try to tell us” that Black people were equal to Whites. It became clear to me fifty years ago that the souls of us Whites were being sickened with lies and hatred and that health and wholeness required full-hearted rejection of that so-called “lost cause”. Remove these symbols of betrayal of American’s ideals.
