I myself once stood for elector. I had every intention of voting for the candidate to whose party I was pledged, if the occasion to do so had arisen. As matters stand, I would refer to John Kennedy's characterization of political courage in Profiles in Courage: I do not expect my representative to reflect my own limited views slavishly while in office. On the contrary: I would expect my representative to be far better informed than I concerning the practical options open for action on the principles we share. Where a divergence of opinion occurs, I would anticipate a full, accurate, and open explanation of the chosen course of action.
