The President’s words and actions on January 6 amounted to incitement to rebellion against duly constituted national authority, to speak only of Constitutional breaches. They are in themselves adequate grounds for impeachment and Congressional discipline. Yet those seditious actions represent only the culmination of an extended pattern of cultivation of unauthorized armed groups (e.g., speaking to the Proud Boys, “Stand down . . . and stand by!” to take only one example of grossly un-Presidential agitation. Unless one is willing to accept this behavior as consistent with a sworn duty “to defend the Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic,” one must support purposeful Congressional action to remove Trump from public life. If such irresponsible actions as his have no meaningful, practical consequences, no standard of ethical behavior binds the President. That outcome is simply unacceptable; any sane, informed American citizen would agree, regardless of political preferences and ideological orientation.
