The local press is the only way to find out what is happening in your community. I do not depend on the local press for national news, but for state and local news, i.e., information about the arts, education and economy. The local press also provides insight into the history of the area and into the thoughts both of citizens and leaders. It has been discouraging to see local papers bought up and sold by chains or investment firms, then eliminate staff and circulation. This is especially troublesome with local TV news, as it is more difficult to discover who owns them and the social/political requirements they are imposing on their stations.
