What is it?

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect everyday life across the globe, workers’ rights have come under fire. With stores, shops, and malls closing their doors to practice social distancing, there has been a global drop in demand for many everyday items. Down the supply chain, many of the workers who produce these items are being laid off, often without pay or compensation for the goods they already produced.
In Bangladesh, many garment manufacturers were not paid for the work they had already completed because of lower global demand. This has led to the firing or furlough of more than one million Bangladeshi garment workers since the start of COVID-19.
The Chinese government also forcibly relocated over 30,000 Muslim Uighurs to keep factories open in COVID-19 affected areas which reflects China’s complete disregard for worker’s rights.
Migrant workers have particularly been impacted by COVID-19. In India, an estimated 139 million internal migrant workers have been impacted. And cross-border migrants, numbering more than 160 million worldwide, have suffered as host countries have not provided adequate protections or deported them. This has been an acute problem in Middle Eastern countries.

Why is it important?

Low wage workers around the world in many sectors have been severely impacted by the sudden impact of COVID-19. Government and company responses have been varied depending on the country, but the most vulnerable of workers in the developing world fear not only for their jobs, but for food security and health.
During a public health crisis, maintaining workers’ rights is just as much the task of the government as it is the companies themselves. When demand unexpectedly drops, both parties should work together to find solutions which value their employees’ rights and compensates them fairly for work already completed.
Consumers should have an awareness of where and how their goods and services come from and adapt purchasing practices to fully respect understand workers’ rights.
Authoritarian regimes are using coronavirus as a means to limit basic rights – freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of the press. In places like Burma (Myanmar) and Cambodia, the governments and local industries are taking advantage of the crisis to suppress unions and workers.

The second annual John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service has been awarded to the people of Hong Kong in recognition of their fight for democracy. The award, which was presented to the people of Lesbos, Greece, last year was presented this year to former lawmaker Emily Lau Wai-hing and activist Figo Chan Ho-wun on Saturday, November 23rd. The two accepted the award from Cindy McCain, the wife of late Senator John McCain, alongside the Halifax Security Forum, on behalf of all protesters in Hong Kong.

Giving this award to the people of Hong Kong makes the Halifax Security Forum—a network of international experts, academics, military officials, entrepreneurs and authors—the first international organization to recognize the struggles of the city’s people. This certainly comes at a delicate time: last week, the US Congress almost unanimously voted to pass the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act. This act would impose stricter monitoring of Hong Kong and, should any action be taken by the government to erode at the city’s freedoms, sanctions against China. President Trump, who has been in the process of working out a new trade deal with Beijing as a focal point of his re-election campaign, has yet to comment on whether he will sign the act into law or not.

In this context, the Halifax Forum’s recognition of the Hong Kongese could be seen as a challenge to Beijing itself. However, the Forum stands firm in its decision. Cindy McCain, who is also a board member of the Forum, said that she hopes “this tribute to those who are struggling for their rights in Hong Kong will encourage more people around the world to raise their voices in support of their cause, especially in my country’s government. They are fighting for something larger than themselves.”

On June 4, 1989, the Chinese Communist Party violently suppressed pro-democracy protesters at what is now known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre. Thirty-one years later, still little is known about the actual events which occurred as the CCP continues to make efforts to hide its past human rights violations from its own citizens and the rest of the world. Amid the CCP’s violent suppression of the demonstrators, tanks destroyed the symbolic 'Goddess of Democracy’ statue, copies of which has since been erected around the world as a symbol of defiance. Today, the Chinese government is faced with similar pro-democracy protests – this time in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong has traditionally existed as a Special Administrative Region and thus enjoys its own autonomy defined by the principle of “one country, two systems”. For the past year, pro-democracy protests have been violently repressed by security forces loyal to Beijing. In May 2020, the CCP introduced new legislation aimed at curbing Hong Kong’s territorial independence and its citizens’ human freedoms.

Today, protesters in Hong Kong stand in solidarity with protesters in the United States. Like the protesters at Tiananmen Square, Hong Kongers still see the United States as beacon of hope as Hong Kong protesters have sung the U.S. National Anthem as a symbol of democracy and a call for our continued support. The vast majority of Americans who marched in the protests have done so peacefully – while only a small minority have resorted to violence. Today’s protest movements in both Hong Kong and the US underscore how peaceful, nonviolent protests can achieve solidarity and unity in purpose and drive societal change for the better.

What is it?

On April 15, South Korea will go ahead with its parliamentary election despite the global COVID-19 outbreak. In order to ensure the safety of its citizens, the South Korean government has disinfected over 14,000 polling stations and marked 3-foot intervals to make sure that voters practice social distancing.
South Korea and the U.S. confirmed their first COVID-19 cases within a day of each other but today the U.S. has the most confirmed cases globally while South Korea has barely surpassed 10,000.

Why is it important?

Forty-seven countries including the United Kingdom, France and Ethiopia have postponed their elections but South Korea provides some important lessons to other democracies like the United states who are considering how to proceed with their elections.

On April 15, South Korea will go ahead with its parliamentary election despite the global COVID-19 outbreak. In order to ensure the safety of its citizens, the South Korean government has disinfected over 14,000 polling stations and marked 3-foot intervals to make sure that voters practice social distancing.
South Korea and the U.S. confirmed their first COVID-19 cases within a day of each other but today the U.S. has the most confirmed cases globally while South Korea has barely surpassed 10,000.

Over the past two weeks, the United States has been rocked by protests (peaceful and sometimes violent) surrounding the death of George Floyd at the hands of law enforcement officers which has been called by all corners of the political spectrum as a severe human rights violation. Some of the subsequent national protests have been violently repressed by law enforcement and in some places, the United States military has been used to disperse protesters and protect monuments. On Monday, June 1, in a highly controversial move, law enforcement officers used tear gas to disperse peaceful protesters outside the White House so that President Trump could take a photo at the nearby damaged St John’s Episcopal Church.

Authoritarian regimes have ironically condemned the United States, including some of the world’s worst human rights violators like China, Iran and North Korea. But what is different than protests in America versus these countries is that American protests are broadcast for the world to see. That cannot be said for China, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela and many other repressive regimes. Activists in those countries are shut down, jailed and killed, never to attain justice:

The world is reacting to the United States because we are held to a higher standard. We have been the standard-bearer for the fight for global democracy and human rights for a generation. When the world sees that we too are struggling with injustice and inequity, the world notices, for better or for worse. The difference is our institutions guarantee a free press, rule of law and freedom to protest.

As mentioned above, Congress already allocated $500 million to support elections, but in a Politico article, experts believe more is needed.

Voters need options: mail-in, online or even drop it off at a drive up location.

A Montana judge recently ruled that part of an old Montana law is unconstitutional for banning robo calls that are \"promoting a political campaign or any use related to a political campaign.”

The court reasoned that banning robo calls might severely damage campaigns with low funding and therefore posed a dangerous restriction on free speech.

What is it?

Over the weekend demonstrators across the United States protested the tragic death of George Floyd and police brutality. In some unfortunate cases, protesters clashed with law enforcement officers while other law enforcement officers were seen marching side by side with the protesters.
In some cities, stores, government building and monuments were vandalized and looted, leading to over 4,000 arrests nationwide. This has led to many impromptu city-wide or regional lockdowns as over 45 million Americans were forced to stay at home on Sunday night.
While these protests are occurring, many have continued to encourage demonstrators to wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines as the COVID-19 pandemic remains prevalent around the country.
On Friday, May 29, a CNN news crew was arrested on live TV, drawing attention to some law enforcements’ unjust treatment of journalists covering the protests. Since, multiple reports of journalists facing tear gas, rubber bullets and pepper spray have surfaced.

Why is it important?

Freedom of assembly and the right to protest are both protected for all citizens by the Constitution and are vital tool of democracy. When a society does not see eye to eye with its officials, non-violent civic protest is an effective instrument to bring these issues to the forefront of the conversation.
Police brutality is a human rights violation and should be condemned whenever it occurs. The death of George Floyd highlights this issue but it must be addressed in the same universal lens with which we regard police brutality around the world.
Many political and thought leaders have spoken out against violent protest. President Obama reminded Americans to “not excuse violence, or rationalize it, or participate in it”.

Over the weekend demonstrators across the United States protested the tragic death of George Floyd and police brutality. In some unfortunate cases, protesters clashed with law enforcement officers while other law enforcement officers were seen marching side by side with the protesters.
In some cities, stores, government building and monuments were vandalized and looted, leading to over 4,000 arrests nationwide. This has led to many impromptu city-wide or regional lockdowns as over 45 million Americans were forced to stay at home on Sunday night.
While these protests are occurring, many have continued to encourage demonstrators to wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines as the COVID-19 pandemic remains prevalent around the country.
On Friday, May 29, a CNN news crew was arrested on live TV, drawing attention to some law enforcements’ unjust treatment of journalists covering the protests. Since, multiple reports of journalists facing tear gas, rubber bullets and pepper spray have surfaced.

Why is it important?

Freedom of assembly and the right to protest are both protected for all citizens by the Constitution and are vital tool of democracy. When a society does not see eye to eye with its officials, non-violent civic protest is an effective instrument to bring these issues to the forefront of the conversation.
Police brutality is a human rights violation and should be condemned whenever it occurs. The death of George Floyd highlights this issue but it must be addressed in the same universal lens with which we regard police brutality around the world.\n
Many political and thought leaders have spoken out against violent protest. President Obama reminded Americans to “not excuse violence, or rationalize it, or participate in it”.
